   The Original Bamboo Factory was established in 1990 by 4 young entrepreneurs who recognized the incredible benefits of bamboo, Jamaica’s vast resource of this raw material and the underutilization of this plant compared with other countries in the world. 

Of the four directors after two years only John Hamilton remained and has continued to this day as the sole owner/operator . His ancestry is of Scottish origin whose father was the first in line to live here and manage the family’s sugar estate at Caymanas. John was sent off to school at an early age to the UK with the intention of returning to run the family property but 4 years of Ag college and working on the farm soon lost out to the exciting world of film and making movies and on his return he got work in the art department on a number of feature films . Before coming back to live in Jamaica he spent a year travelling in Hawaii, Australia and Thailand , the latter of which he once stayed in a bamboo hut and viewed first hand the locals creative use of this material, to make bamboo chair as well as other bamboo furniture. With the future of film work becoming less sure the idea of making bamboo furniture came to be a possibility after seeing a set at an uptown Kingston residence that had been imported from Los Angeles although manufactured in the Dominican Republic. John’s film co worker, Domanic who showed him this furniture had the same idea and soon had his brother Christian and cousin Andrew join the team and started the company . 

Since then the company has gone on to produce a vast range of furnishings and accessories for the local and export market catering mainly to the villa and hotel market as well as private homes and custom installations and to date are the only bamboo furniture manufacturer in Jamaica.
