Pieces Since 1990
The Bamboo Factory Store traces its origins to 1990, when four entrepreneurs recognised the extraordinary potential of bamboo as a material for fine furniture. After two years of building the foundation, John Hamilton became the sole proprietor and continues to lead the business today.
The Journey
Hamilton's background is as rich as the furniture he creates. With Scottish ancestry through his father, who managed an estate at Caymanas, Hamilton initially pursued agricultural studies and film work in the UK before returning to Jamaica.
His travels through Hawaii, Australia, and Thailand exposed him to bamboo craftsmanship across cultures. He was particularly struck by the creative furniture applications he observed from local artisans — pieces that combined natural beauty with remarkable durability and sustainability.
Why import what Jamaica could create? The bamboo was already here — all we needed was the vision.
The Vision
The business concept crystallised after viewing imported bamboo furnishings at an uptown Kingston residence. Hamilton saw an opportunity: why import what Jamaica could create? Together with co-directors Domanic, Christian, and Andrew, they established what would become Jamaica's only bamboo furniture manufacturer.
Today
The Bamboo Factory Store serves the villa, hotel, and residential markets with custom pieces and export products. Every piece is handcrafted in our workshop at Caymanas Estate Road, Saint Catherine, using sustainably sourced Jamaican bamboo.
From four-poster beds that grace luxury villas to custom dining sets for resort restaurants, our furniture tells a story of Caribbean craftsmanship at its finest.
